DEFECTORS Captain Martin White and Sergeant Arthur Everton had a choice of deaths. They had been declared officially dead by the United States government after their plane, with nineteen others aboard, had been forced down over the Black Sea. The captain and the sergeant, the only survivors of the crash, swam twenty miles to shore, surfacing at the small resort town of Yevpatoriya, which, unfortunately for the two, was the site of a secret Soviet missile center. The Russian secret police had a problem. They could kill the two Americans, but what would happen if the news leaked out? Or they could turn the two men over to the American Embassy: but who really knew how much they had seen in their nine hours in Yevpa-toriya? There was only one solution: somehow, convince the men to defect, to become Russian citizens with jobs and housing in Moscow, to live out their lives with new identities in the Soviet Union. It could have been worse. The KGB provided apartments, jobs, and even women. Everton fell in love with a beautiful Russian girl. For Russia, it was the good life, but the men weré Americans. Each for his own reason wanted to go home. And that, the authorities assured them, was impossible. There could be no escape from their new lives. They would have to make the best of a bad time. Or make the impossible escape.
